Context
At BYU there is a strong interest in the use of online technology for enriching both teaching and learning experiences. Furthermore, they are concerned about two types of students: traditional students who attend lectures in a normal class setting, and those who receive their education through distance-ed courses. That said, the university is interested in improving conventional courses through enhanced technology, and also creating additional opportunities for those students who don't attend class in person, but instead take courses online.
The SCORM specification is important, given that it enables online materials to be distributed on a wide variety of software online platforms, not just a single LMS (Learning Management System). This of course increases the possibilities for transferring materials for use by other students and other universities. Such an outcome coincides perfectly with BYU's mission to play a global and international role in education, in as much as the university hopes to benefit from knowledge and content created in other areas, and at the same time help others with the knowledge and content created on our own campus.
